The paradox of a connected world is the desire for personalized experience, combined with the growing understanding that insightful algorithms can find personal things in data even when it was thought to be safely anonymized. Massive regulatory disruption from GDPR, CCPA, and the kind of forced transparency seen in the Algorithmic Accountability Act now making its way through Congress, require rigorous scrutiny and thoughtful consideration not so much of “big data” but of carefully limited and governed data collection and use.
