Imagine that a hacker installed malware on your company’s computer system, encrypting your files, and preventing you from accessing them. Then that same hacker demanded you pay a ransom to have your files “repaired.” This crime, called ransomware, is occurring with increasing frequency. When it happens, it can paralyze a business. The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) reported that extortion attempts cost companies $209 million in the first three months of 2016, compared with $25 million in all of 2015.*
